Claude
Debussy
Claude Debussy (1862–1918) broke away from traditional structures to create a new world of sound often labeled as Impressionism. His piano music focuses on the creation of atmosphere, color and mood rather than conventional melody or development. Pianists must approach his Preludes and "Images" with a sensitive ear for pedaling and a wide palette of tonal shades. His works challenge the performer to think like a painter, using the keys to evoke the movement of water, the shimmer of light and the stillness of a cathedral.
