Jean-Philippe
Rameau
Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683–1764) was one of the most important theorists and composers of the French Baroque, whose keyboard works are celebrated for their dramatic power and character. His suites for harpsichord are filled with stylized dances and descriptive pieces that evoke various moods or personages. For the modern pianist, Rameau’s music offers a wealth of ornamentation and rhythmic complexity. Performing his work requires a sharp sense of articulation and an ability to balance the formal structure of the Baroque with a bold, almost theatrical, expressive intent.
